Debriefing '07

Now that the 2007 season is behind us, most of the Trek world settles into a bit of break - a well-needed break, for many. Matt, Michael and many others have worked very hard to ensure that Origins and GenCon went off without a hitch, and I'd say this year's cons were as good as any others. The guys that ran the Europeans and the Australians worked as hard - or harder - to ensure their cons got great reviews as well.

But as we catch our breath and find out what the future holds, it's time to take a brief look back and see what worked and what didn't work throught out the 2007 OP season. So, if you have any suggestions - good or bad, make them. Comments? Make 'em! Want to ask someone to step down, over, or up? Do it!

It's my hope that we can take your suggestions, comments, concerns and criticisms from this year and use them to make a stronger, more positive showing next year.

Congratulations to the Worlds 2007 Champion!

Earlier this evening, Caleb Grace defeated Barry Windschitl in two games to claim the 2007 Star Trek CCG 2E World Championship. He is the first to win back-to-back Star Trek championships since Dave Bowling won the 1996 National Championships and the 1997 World Championships. His road to victory ran through James Hoskin, upsetting the top-seeded Brit two games to one. Caleb's deck flew in the face of the established metagame, running two headquarters and ultra-cheap personnel to speed through missions. Congrats to Caleb for his outstanding win!

Captain's Personal Log: Sounds Like Fun

I've known only a few challenges greater than coordinating and running World Championships. Some of you will recall the unpleasantness in 2005; I was greatly discouraged as a result, and didn't want to have anything to do with Trek for a long time. But the important thing was that I learned a great deal about where to draw the line between having fun with players and running a clean event.

I thought I had all the bases covered. There couldn't possibly be a decklist error that we didn't catch; the deckchecking was going perfectly. But there was, and it quickly got out of hand after the deck in question ended up winning the next round two games to one. I was then posed with the question: how do I administer the appropriate penalty? Do I award his game loss retroactively, knocking him out of Day 3? Or do I call a penalty at all? There were accusations of misdeeds flying both ways, and I had to resolve it with some measure of responsibility.

This unfortunate incident really made me think about the way I run an event. The situation occured because I delegated authority in haste to get to the next round. Since then, I have run events alerting the players beforehand: there will be no asking "how long until the next round". There will be no jokes of wasted time or hovering near the judge's table to "encourage" me to go faster. It is more important to get results correct than to finish the tournament as quickly as possible.

This is not to say I don't try to speed thing along. I'm not looking to waste my own time, and I make every effort to get through deckchecks efficiently, but not at the expense of accuracy. But by asking players to help in the following ways, a few things are expedited in the long haul of an eight-round tournament:

•Print your decklist. This is number one on my list of player requests; I'm a tournament director, not a calligrapher, after all. Many decklists are often written at the last minute, and as such, have less-than-stellar scribbling detailing their card choices. This is one contributor to long hours deckchecking. Print your decklist; you can still scribble in a change here or there 20 minutes before the tournament.

•Format and alphabetize your decklist. Group similar card types: equipment, events, interrupts, personnel, and then ships. This makes deckchecking a breeze; all we have to do is put the deck in order.

•After each round, put your deck in order before you turn it in. If your deck comes to the judge's table in a heap, I have to sort through it to make it match your decklist. This consumes far too much time, and could easily be avoided.

•Do not ask superfluous questions of the judges if they look like they're busy. Even if it's a fairly innocuous idea, I know myself too well, and can often get dragged into a conversation when I should be getting things ready for the next round. If I look like I'm bored to tears, I would welcome your comments. (I can virtually guarantee I will not look bored this weekend. Tired perhaps, but definitely not bored.)

•Remember to sign your PADDs after each round. If I have to go hunt you down because you didn't sign your sheet, it wastes valuable time, and it makes you look irresponsible.

•Offer to make food/drink runs for the judges. If we don't have to leave the tournament area, that means more time is spent invested in making the tournament a quality event. It's not that we're fat and lazy (even though we might be), it's just that we'd rather be ever-present and not have to deal with trivial things like this.

•Have patience with the judges. If I appear frustrated or angry, it's probably just because I have many tasks to do and not a whole lot of time to do them in. It's not personal.

"I take it the odds are against us, and the situation is grim…" It's felt like that before, but with your help, the success of 2007 Worlds will outshine the shortcomings of the past. Here's to a fantastic tournament!

Just a taste of what's in store…

Definitely the tip of the iceberg. See you all in a week!

Worlds 2007 - Rulings Update

There are a few outstanding cards that need some clarification before Worlds next week; the following update is ONLY valid for Gen Con 2007 Star Trek CCG 2E events. Many of these issues will be addressed in the next CRD, but these interim rulings will have to suffice for now. Any further questions may be answered before next Wednesday.

Sabotaged Transporter
When more than one personnel could be simultaneously affected by this event, its owner may discard as many personnel with cost 4 or more as he or she desires (up to the number of personnel affected). When this event's owner executes its effect, he or she may examine all his or her opponent's personnel that are about to be stopped. (This is analogous to Assassin personnel text.)

Up the Ante
Erratum: "You may end this mission attempt to prevent and overcome this dilemma (all your personnel are stopped). If you do not and you complete this mission this turn, you win the game. If you do not and do not complete this mission this turn, you lose the game."

Interrupts
Interrupts are considered to have cost 0 when considered by other cards.

Bok, Vengeful Daimon
If a player commands no events while his opponent commands Bok, Bok's text is only active if his owner commands an event with cost 1 or more.

James T. Kirk, Original Thinker
Interim erratum: "When a dilemma is about to be revealed that this personnel would face, you may return him to his owner's hand to prevent and overcome that dilemma." This clarifies this personnel's interaction with Machinations (dilemmas must be placed in the dilemma stack to be revealed, so Kirk OT may not use his ability against a dilemma chosen with Machinations).

Weyoun, "Defective" Clone and Jean-Luc Picard, Worf's cha'DIch
Both these personnel cannot replace a personnel if he is included in the same selection.

Kira Nerys, Resourceful Prisoner
Kira's ability cannot return her to play if she removes herself from discard pile (she is removed from the game and unavailable for resolution).

Skills (reminder from CtA Rulebook page 10)
Some cards allow personnel to gain skills. If a personnel gains a skill he or she already has, it increases his or her level of that skill. For example, a personnel who already has Astrometrics and gains another Astrometrics now has 2 Astrometrics. (This is important for some dilemmas like Accelerated Aging and Urgency.)

Changing of the Guard

Due to my recent performance at Origins, I have asked Matt Kirk to take over the judging responsibilities for the World Championship. I'm happy to report he has accepted. I will still be there to help out with side tournaments and the like, but I will be using my Day 3 Bye and playing in the World Championship.

After all, what kind of jerk would I be to win it and not use it? ;-)

2007 Star Trek Continental Champion

Congratulations to Charles Plaine, esteemed judge and new North American Star Trek Champion! Charlie did not lose a single match all weekend, losing but a lone game in the finals to James Hoskins, who, but for Charlie, dominated both days the tournament.

You can expect decklists and tournament reports to appear soon.

Captain’s Personal Log: Break the Rules, and You Will Suffer

Continental Championships are Level 3 events, and as such, carry with them a higher weight towards player ratings, and the prize selection is often far beyond what a TOC could offer (after all, there’s only seven continents). As you journey to the Championship of your continent, here are a few tips on the expected behavior during the event, and especially between rounds, when most player misconduct occurs:

•When the tournament is about to begin, listen to the tournament director. He will give you vital information about his desired method of logistics for the day; he will also tell you who your first opponent is. When the TD is talking, be quiet. Even though he might be saying something you’ve already heard, the entire player base deserves to be able to hear the TD’s instructions.

•When you meet your opponent for the round, shake his/her hand. Unless you’ve got some contagious disease (why didn’t you stay at home?), there is no reason to be discourteous to another player of the game you love. Small talk is perfectly acceptable while shuffling decks, and often serves to break the ice with your opponent so that game-time communication takes less time.

•Give your opponent a chance to look at your cards when you play them. This seems so basic, but many players get upset when they claim their opponents didn’t allow them to examine the card when it was played. You might have memorized all two thousand Second Edition cards; realize that the rest of us may have not. A little patience and forbearance by players helps to make a smooth tournament.

•Don’t take notes during your game! The only thing you are allowed to write down during a game is any change in score. Even something as simple as your opponent’s name written down during the game is a minor infraction; write only before and/or after the game.

•Keep your eyes on your own game. Scouting other games at your table is not permitted; it gives you an unfair advantage in future games. When your game has concluded, clean up quickly and walk with your opponent to the judge’s table so you can report your game’s result, bringing your score sheets along as well. Stay at the judge’s table until he has dismissed you; you will need to sign or initial your sheet after the judge has entered the results.

•When you’re done reporting, don’t go back to the tournament area! You may not watch games after yours is over; this is the same as scouting. Even if you’re just curious how your friend is doing with the 80-card Borg deck he built last night, be patient and wait for his game to finish before you talk to him.

•When you talk to other players between rounds, don’t talk about specifics in the game you just played. Stick to if you won or lost, if either player’s deck worked well or not, or if someone got a good/bad draw or had amazing/horrible luck during the game. No card titles, no skill names, no Weapons/Strength totals, and no point values should be discussed. You’d be surprised at the ability of some players to puzzle out what deck a particular player is using based on the barest of hints about it.

•Bring your trade binder(s)! Between rounds at a Continental Championship is a great time to trade cards; it kills time before the next round, and you can track down those last few cards you need to build that killer deck for Worlds. Also, if he doesn’t look too busy, don’t be afraid to ask the TD to trade cards. Most will happily oblige; judges have trade wants too!

•If you decide to drop, tell the TD when you submit your score sheets for that round. If you decide later before the next round is about to start, tell the TD then. Even if you tell a friend your intention to drop, and they relay that to the TD, the TD cannot drop you from the event without your initials on the score sheet acknowledging that you did in fact want to drop. Without an initialed sheet, you will be paired in the next round, and your opponent will receive a full win as long as they show up. So it is in everyone’s best interest that you communicate your intentions to the TD.

•Offer to turn your deck in at the judge’s table between rounds. Usually TDs at these high level events like to keep a close watch on players’ decks whenever they’re not being used. Deckchecks are consistently used to uncover any misconduct in these events, which necessitates the TD storing the decks between rounds. If you’d really like to help the TD out, put your deck in the same order of your decklist before you turn it in (in case he checks it, it will take much less time to do so). Don’t ask to see your decklist while doing this though; make a copy beforehand that you can reference.

•Get food quickly and return to the tournament site ASAP. The amount of time in a Star Trek round is usually at least 30 minutes long and can stretch up to 90 minutes after time has been called, if the final two turns are being very carefully played (which often occurs at these high-level events). Even if the TD announces a set schedule for rounds, it still behooves you to be in the area for any unexpected changes to that schedule. Rarely does a tournament run exactly to plan; be prepared for the bizarre and unusual.

•Hook up with other non-local players! Large tournaments are a great place to compare notes with players from other nearby areas; by supporting their efforts, you may find they will return the favor. Phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and instant messenger screen names are great information to exchange; consider making a ‘business card’ for your area ahead of time so all your contact information is condensed on something that will fit in a trade binder sleeve.

High-level Trek is a whole different animal from local events; with a higher level of rules enforcement, and players committed to playing at their best, the competition is fierce, but also highly rewarding. The experience that many players take away from a Continental Championship is a positive one, and reminds them why they’ve stuck with this game and community of players through good times and bad. May your Continental experience leave you thirsty for more!

Origins Rulings

This is a reminder to send all rules questions to startrek@rellekmr.net. Posting them on the Decipher boards or the Team Jersey boards does not guarantee that I will see or respond to them. Send me the question directly, and I will be sure to answer it. I am going to be judging Origins, so it would be wise to ask me your questions if you plan on attending.

Origins Preparation

It has been decided that I will be judging Origins. In the run-up to the event, I would like to clear up as many points of confusion as possible.

First and foremost, yes, IaMD will be legal for all Star Trek 2E events at Origins.

Secondly, I highly suggest you read all posts on this blog before heading to Ohio. There's plenty of good advice.

Thirdly, I will be using the unofficial FAQ at http://stccg.wikispaces.com/ as the basis for most rulings. This has been compiled by myself and the other Level 4 Trek judges, so don't be surprised by anything on there come tournament time.

Lastly, I would like to hear from you. Please send ANY questions, no matter how inane they might seem or clear the answer might be to you or how often they've been addressed on the Decipher forums to me at startrek@rellekmr.net. I will answer as many questions as I can (in consultation with the other judges when called for) here on this blog and likely will add the most pertinent ones to the FAQ.

Please, e-mail me at the above address. Do not assume anything from the boards. I do not intend to be trawling through 500 message posts when it comes time to make a ruling. We have a brand new set out and the one before that generated much heated discussion, so I know there are burning issues that need to be addressed pre-Origins. Again, e-mail those questions to startrek@rellekmr.net

Thank you.

IaMD Legal for Origins!

The official release date for In a Mirror Darkly was June 15, 2007. This means that the cards will be legal for all tournament play beginning June 22, 2007. Origins attendees will have approximately two weeks to prepare for the new environment before the 2007 North American Continental Championships.

Captain’s Personal Log: Disciplinary Action

Whether by intent or accident, misunderstandings between players arise in almost every tournament. Sometimes it can be something as simple as resolving two card’s conflicting effects, while the possibility also exists for larger arguments escalating into shouting matches, threats, and in the worst cases, physical violence. As the stakes get higher, players naturally become more defensive of their tournament life, but it’s up to the tournament director to keep any potentially volatile players in check. Here are some suggestions on how to increase the peace at your TOC:

•Communicate. This is the best way to avoid any unintentional misunderstandings; by disarming these situations ahead of time, you greatly enhance the TOC experience for both your players and yourself. Some ways you can communicate with your players before your Territorial:

1. Have your players pre-register for the event by submitting their e-mail addresses to you, then send out updates through a mail forwarding group (through GoogleGroups or another service).
2. Post flyers! Not just at the venue you have scheduled, but also at other game & hobby stores around town (make sure you ask permission first, as most game store owners do not take kindly to advertisements for their competition in their own store).
3. Make sure your flyers list the date, start time, cost, number of rounds, prizes offered, venue address, venue phone number, and your phone number (an e-mail address might be a nice addition on the bottom edge of the flyer, printed vertically in strips so that players can tear a section off to take with them). Mention if you are using decklist registration.
4. Keep a blog like this one! This gives you a great compromise between the hassle of e-mailing everyone when some of the event details change, and the administration challenges of your own web site.

•Know the rules, and make sure your players have access to them. Many times you can deflect a player’s claim of bias by directing them to a passage in either the Call to Arms Rulebook or Current Rulings Document. If a player sees it in writing, he/she often becomes less suspicious that they are being ruled unfairly against. Besides the two documents already mentioned, make sure you have a copy of the DGMA Code of Conduct handy so that you may point players to where they can see examples and commensurate punishments for tournament infractions.

•During your event, watch as many games as possible. While you may not offer rulings before players ask for them in any given round, your continual presence will encourage players to ask more questions than they might in a run-of-the-mill tournament. This is a good thing; as championship-level events, TOCs should have higher play standards. This may also assist you in making rulings; if you are familiar with the game state before players ask you a question, it saves them the trouble of having to explain to you the exact circumstances of the questioned interaction.

•If you use decklists, check the list twice when you deckcheck (even if it’s right the first time). It works for Santa, and it can work for you too. While deckchecks can be time-consuming, they are the most important line of defense against players who would try to abuse the tournament structure. Since the penalty is fairly high for a failed deckcheck, make sure you have concrete evidence before you issue any game losses. (Trust me, I know what I’m talking about here…)

•Be consistent in your rulings. This may be the toughest part of being a TD; no one likes to see an unassuming player get burned because they didn’t know about a particular rule. You can only do so much to prepare your players before they must endure the rigors of a higher-level tournament; once in a tournament, they must accept your rulings or risk ejection from the event. Trek players are some of the most forgiving CCGers around right now, but even the most patient players will put their foot down when confronted with someone who double-clutches on every decision during a game. Encourage players to treat each other fairly during their games.

•If a shouting match breaks out, take both players outside while a third party watches their belongings. This unfortunate occurrence can happen to even the most prepared TD, and between the most unsuspected players. The first step in resolving the conflict is to remove both parties from the tournament environment; the change of perspective will help to calm the down, and the distraction to your other players will be removed as well. Tell both players that you want to hear their side of the story uninterrupted by the other player, and that your decision will take into consideration their reaction during the other player’s testimony. Sometimes these arguments turn out to be silly things like an “improper” shuffle, and other times the specter of cheating is raised. Keep your voice firm but level while resolving the conflict. Only when you are convinced that they have regained their composure should you allow them to re-enter the tournament area.

•Any physical violence or threat thereof should be treated seriously. The DGMA Code of Conduct (CoC) automatically disqualifies any participants who throw punches, as well as any that threaten to do so. This occurrence should be dealt with swiftly; you might want to have your local police department’s non-emergency number in your cell phone on the off-off-off chance that this happens.

High stakes demand higher standards. As seasoned TOC season players know, even the strongest players can be tripped up by a minor CoC infraction; players and TDs alike should strive for the highest level of commitment to these standards so that every TOC this season comes off without a hitch. Good luck in all your tournaments this season; may they be free of incident thanks to your preparation!
